My art will be to meet you on the street,

open wide with pointed tongues. My instinct

is to bear witness to new winter and cold

What does a riverbank girl become

when she hasn’t heard the early spring scream

of ice breaking in over twenty years?

Only women scream in a city of one million

scream to fend off pain or to remember it.

My talent for spotting bobcat tracks is obsolete

in a city of one million. Sometimes a sallow coyote

passes my back window. Would I still be a poet

if I stayed in the sweep of winter wheat?
